Last week I started writing a post highlighting two “leopard and color” looks I created that were inspired by Pinterest. I intended to share my thoughts on the clothing—and another snippet of my creative side—but I saw something on social media that influenced me to change my mind, slightly anyway.

The post I saw was an advertisement for Lord & Taylor, which features a Black plus-size model. I wasn’t caught off guard by the image. In all honesty, I didn’t give much thought to it, but I decided to read the comments. Will I ever learn? As usual, there was a mix of opinions within the comments. Some were about the store itself and others were about the model. There were readers who found fault with the ad because of the model’s body type. One comment read, “is this an ad for Lord & Taylor or Lane Bryant?” A few other people accused the retail company of “glorifying” obesity.

I almost allowed what I read to bother me, but then I remembered we’re all entitled to our opinions. Furthermore, there are things I see and read that I don’t agree with or like. I also remembered the message on the shirt I wore this week that I planned to highlight, “Do More of What Makes You Happy.”

Aspirations in Color

I wanted to create a look that expresses my love for color and uniqueness. However, “Aspirations in Color” has an inspirational message for me and hopefully, it can encourage others as well.

I’m coming to terms with the fact that I’m not doing what makes me happy and it behooves me to fix it. I’ve allowed the possibility of failure to hinder me. But I realize it is better to try and learn from my mistakes than stand in the shadows and just daydream about my aspirations. So, I am redeeming the time.

I know I said it before, but it bears repeating. Everybody isn’t going to like you. Somebody is going to find fault with something you’re doing, saying, or possibly wearing. Be you anyway. If what you’re doing makes you happy and it aligns with your core values and beliefs—go with it! There will always be a naysayer or two.

Additionally, stop entertaining people who damper your spirit. Surround yourself with people who encourage and uplift you and engage in activities that ignite peace and positivity. Be happy! Life is too precious to spend it being miserable and unhappy.

Now, here are the details of the outfit. This look comprises a graphic tee, denim capris, a cable knit sweater, a leopard print scarf, and purple booties.

The Tee: I was drawn to this shirt because of the colors and more specifically, the message. I purchased the tee in size XXL for $13.99—it’s on sale right now for $9.79. The shirt is soft and the colors are vibrant. I like it!

The Capris: I originally purchased the Levis to pair with another outfit, but I thought they would be a good addition to this look as well. I purchased the capris in size 18 for $26.99. They have a good amount of stretch that makes movement easy and comfortable. The Levis are a part of Amazon’s prime try before you buy selection, which is an added bonus!

The Sweater: I chose this piece because of the color and design. The teal complements the lettering in the shirt and the style of the sweater is perfect for the season. I snagged this sweater in size XXL for $36.99. It is cozy, soft, and warm. The color is fun and vibrant, too. I like it a lot.

The Scarf: The contrasting leopard print is a bold addition that underpins the intent of the overall look. I got it for $15.99. This was a good purchase. It pairs nicely with my mustard coat—from Amazon pictured above—and other pieces in my wardrobe.

The Boot: Once again, my favorite part of the outfit is the boot. This isn’t odd considering how much I like footwear. I know the title of the post states that “I found it on Amazon,” but that isn’t true with the boots. Although Amazon carries A.S. 98 boots, they don’t have the Vale Bootie. I purchased mine from Nordstrom for $399.95. The color is bold like the picture and the leather feels like “buttah”—which it should, considering the price. However, they are not very comfortable and it was a hassle getting them on my feet. They are super cute and unique; however, I’m not so sure I’d recommend copping a pair. They may take a trip back to the store.
