Liberty & the Pursuit of Happiness

I’ve Fallen In Love with the Crescent City

Is it possible to fall in love with a place? After my recent excursion through the streets of New Orleans, Louisiana – I am a strong believer that it is.

To say I enjoyed my trip would be a huge misrepresentation of the feelings that were ignited within me during my stay in the Crescent City. I cannot pinpoint the exact cause of my sense of fulfillment. Could it be the mere fact that I was physically in a place I had dreamed of visiting for probably more than decade, or is there more to it?

Feelings of excitement consumed me as my departure date for Louisiana approached. There have been numerous times when I mentioned my interest in hearing the music and tasting the food that is associated with the “Big Easy.” And I admit I allowed various excuses to keep me from going for several years. I recall telling myself I shouldn’t take off from work, I questioned whether or not to spend the money, and I even wondered if I should travel there alone. But today I can say I am glad I did all three.

Although I enjoy my job, most of the time, and I recognize how overwhelming it can be for my colleagues when I am absent – it is imperative that I take time for myself to be rejuvenated and just simply relax. And the few days I spent in “N’awlings” was exactly what I needed. From the comfortable bed and amazing shower I keep revisiting in my mind, to the wonderful southern hospitality and warmth I encountered immediately upon arrival. The first resident I conversed with considered me to be courageous for traveling there alone. Little did I know this would be a recurring theme throughout my stay, in addition to igniting the thought to exercise it more.

Overall, I felt comfortable, inspired, proud, accepted, welcomed, and encouraged. I think every person I passed greeted me with a smile and a hearty hello. There was a sense of pride that overcame me when I visited the New Orleans Jazz Museum. Which is filled with the rich and diverse history of the city and the genre of music that was birthed there.

I was inspired by the youth I saw unafraid to share their talents to a sea of unfamiliar on-lookers, which has encouraged me to do the same.

I embraced another level of self-acceptance and love from a culture that is rooted in resilience, remembrance, and ritual. I was introduced to a way of life that identifies with every part of its history that defines who they are with pride.

NOLA did a lot for me mentally and physically. I was blessed with the opportunity to unplug from my day-to-day activities and concerns, and plug into something different and vibrant that has invoked inspiration beyond measure.

New Orleans, I am in love with you and I am counting the days to our reunion. Just like the the endings to those beloved Marvel movies – the Buxom Beauty will return.

Until the next time, be you and most importantly – love you.

Being uniquely you is being uniquely beautiful.
